Falls are the number one cause of injury

Did you know most falls happen at home? One third of adults aged 65 and older fall every year and it is the leading cause of fatal injuries among those over age 85

Falls are a common cause of injury and death, especially among older adults. It is important to understand the different causes of falls and the ways to prevent them. There are various strategies that can be implemented in order to reduce the risk of falling, such as strengthening muscles, improving balance, and making changes in the home environment.  

While falls can be caused by a variety of factors, it is important to understand the internal, external and environmental factors that lead to falls.

Most falls take place at home. To prevent a fall in your home, clear pathways of clutter, remove or secure rugs or carpeting that can slip, wear low-heeled shoes with rubber soles rather than slippers or socks, and use nightlights in your bedroom and bathroom.

Internal factors for falls include muscle weakness, dizziness, medication side effects, vision problems, and changes in blood pressure when moving from lying to standing.

Physical therapists are trained professionals who specialize in preventive care and post-injury rehabilitation, helping individuals stay healthy and avoid dangerous falls. Through exercises and techniques tailored to each person's unique needs, physical therapists can reduce one’s risk of falls dramatically by improving balance, strength, coordination, joint mobility, and gait stability.
